Nigerian-American Democrat Oye Owolewa has been re-elected as the Washington, DC shadow representative.

Owolewa, who made history in 2020 as the first Nigerian-American elected to the US Congress, won with 164,026 votes, representing 82.84 percent of the total.

Though shadow representatives like Owolewa do not have voting power in Congress, they play a key role in advocating for the district’s issues. Owolewa focuses on pushing for DC statehood, aiming to secure voting representation for district residents who currently lack it at the federal level.

In a social media post on platform X, Owolewa expressed gratitude for the support he received: “Thank you, DC, again for giving me a chance to serve. I also want to thank the organisations that have supported, partnered with, and endorsed me.”

Owolewa’s re-election on November 5 took place alongside the presidential election, in which former President Donald Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris, winning enough electoral votes for a second term.
