La Liga president Javier Tebas has expressed his desire for Manchester United’s on-loan forward Mason Greenwood to remain in Spanish football beyond his current stint with Getafe.
Greenwood’s move to Getafe transpired on deadline day in September, following Manchester United’s decision to send him on loan amidst an internal investigation into his conduct.
Although United initially hinted at Greenwood’s permanent departure, recent statements from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe have hinted at a potential reconsideration.
Addressing reporters after speaking at the Financial Times Business of Football Conference in London, Tebas, drawing on his legal background, refrained from passing judgment on Greenwood.
He emphasized that the 22-year-old had been deemed “innocent” rather than having charges dropped against him.
“As a lawyer, if someone came out of a legal case innocent, there is nothing else to say,” Tebas remarked. “He is doing really well as a player, and I hope he continues to stay in Spanish football. That is good for us.”
Tebas stressed the importance of respecting the legal process and refraining from condemnation based on media reports. He emphasized that if a player has not been condemned, it is not within La Liga’s purview to pass judgment.
Greenwood’s contributions to Getafe have been significant, with seven goals and five assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season.
Meanwhile, La Liga is investigating a formal complaint made by Getafe regarding an alleged comment made by Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham towards Greenwood during a match on February 1st.
The incident, which followed Bellingham’s tackle on Greenwood during Real’s 2-0 victory, garnered attention on social media.
While the investigation is ongoing, media reports suggest that Greenwood may seek to have the investigation dropped.
Tebas also praised Bellingham’s impact on La Liga, referring to him as the best English player currently.
He emphasized the importance of having top-tier players in the league and expressed hope for Bellingham’s sustained success in the competition.
