Chelsea beat Luton, Villa close gap on Liverpool
Chelsea halted a string of four consecutive away defeats by securing a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Luton, with Cole Palmer delivering a crucial double.
The visitors gained a 2-0 lead at halftime through powerful strikes from Palmer and Noni Madueke. Despite Luton’s late resurgence sparked by Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo, Palmer’s classy finish secured a 3-0 advantage.
Mauricio Pochettino acknowledged Luton’s resilience, stating, “That is the Premier League. Luton is a team that fights until the end.” While Chelsea controlled the game until the 65th minute, Luton’s spirited fightback added intensity to the match.
Meanwhile, Everton suffered a setback with a 3-0 defeat against Wolves, as Max Kilman, Matheus Cunha, and Craig Dawson found the net for Gary O’Neil’s side, securing their third win in seven days.
In another encounter, Aston Villa claimed a crucial 3-2 win against 10-man Burnley, propelling them to the top of the Premier League alongside Liverpool. Despite recent setbacks, including dropping points at home and losing a 2-0 lead against Manchester United, Villa bounced back with Douglas Luiz’s late penalty that crept in off the underside of the bar.
Leon Bailey opened the scoring for Villa, quickly countered by Zeki Amdouni. Moussa Diaby restored the lead before halftime, and the advantage increased when Sander Berge received a second yellow card, reducing Burnley to 10 men for the final 35 minutes. However, Burnley capitalized on Villa’s high defensive line as Lyle Foster scored 19 minutes from time.
In a dramatic turn of events, Jhon Duran was fouled inside the box, paving the way for Douglas Luiz to fire home the decisive penalty. This hard-fought victory places Unai Emery’s men joint-top of the Premier League table, sharing the summit with Liverpool.
