EURO 2020: Spain oust Croatia in dramatic eight-goal thriller
Spain booked a place in the quarter-finals of the EURO 2020 on Monday evening by defeating Croatia 5-3 after extra time in a dramatic clash at the Parken Stadium in Denmark.
An own goal by Pedri (20′) gave the Croatians the lead but Pablo Sarabia (38′) restored parity for Luis Enrique’s side who made two changes to the team that started the win over Slovakia on Wednesday, dropping Alba and Moreno for Ferran Torres and Gaya.
The goal-fest began in the second half when César Azpilicueta La Roja the lead (57′) for the first time in the game before Ferran Torres netted to make it 3-1 in favour of Spain.
The game took a dramatic twist with five minutes to the end of the game as Mislav Oršić (85′) pulled one back for Croatia before Mario Pašalić (90+2′) sent the stadium wild with a late minute equaliser to send the game into extra-time.
Croatia and Spain have produced the second-highest-scoring match in European Championship history as a result of the eight-goal thriller, after France v Yugoslavia in the 1960 semi-finals (9 – 5-4 to Yugoslavia).
