Reactions as two Nigerian ‘housemaids’ embrace Islam in Libya

The Libya Observer on Wednesday published a report of how two Nigerian ladies working as housemaids in Tripoli, Libya allegedly renounced their faith for Islam.

Sharing a dramatic photograph of the women wearing hijabs and face masks shortly after their conversion on both its Twitter and Facebook accounts, the local Arab media simply captioned it “Two ‘housemaids’ from #Nigeria converted to #Islam in #Tripoli.

Although their names were not given, the report seemed to have generated some heats among Nigerians on the social media platforms.

While some Muslim faithful welcome the conversion two Nigerian ‘housemaids’ allegedly convert to Islam in Libya with optimism, some other Twitter users frowned at the development, saying the ladies were either forced by their employers or they are doing it for ”money.”

On Facebook, Abba Abubakar congratulated them on joining the true religion and appealed to Nigerians not to persecute the ladies for embracing the religion.

“If you look at how Nigerian Muslims do not harm any Christian or non-Muslim, this is enough to understand. Islam does not teach oppression to Muslims and does not accept oppression. Islam is a religion of justice, not a religion of coercion. You should make sure you research”

But Okoye Agubatofia, another Facebook user thinks otherwise.

He allegedly recounted a personal experience that he had in the Arab country, saying it takes discipline to resist lucrative offers that come with such conversion.

“U people know what you promise them before converting them, because I was there b/4, they always promise me heaven and earth to convert me but I refuse, they even promise me that they will build house for me and I will marry their woman but I refuse, all those promises”

Mohsen Mohsen also believed that the ladies would obviously renounce the new-found fame once they are back in Nigeria.

“She will convert back to her orginal religion once she go back to her country,” she said.

On Twitter, Ihuaku Cyril Ukawilu was not too pleased with the manner the two new converted were described.

“Two housmaids? You mean two women from Nigeria right?” he quipped.
