A Ghanaian footballer, Samuel Asamoah, had his joy cut short with a red card after scoring a hattrick for his Belgian club Sint-Truiden.
Asamoah completed his hattrick for the Belgian side in the 63rd minute and partially took off his shirt to celebrate his third goal which gave his side 5-2 victory, under the innerwear was an inscription ‘Jesus Loves You’.
Referee Christof Dierick showed him his second yellow card in the game and thereafter sent hiom off for partially pulling his shirt over his head after he had received initially received a caution in the 52nd minute.
Samuel Asamoah, however, could not see out the entire match as he was shown his second yellow card 12 minutes apart.
As is traditional in football, a second yellow card equates to a red card and causes the player to take an early shower.
The midfielder indicated that he was aware that taking off one’s jersey was not allowed but he was carried away in the moment.
“Of course I knew that I was not allowed to do that. It was from sheer emotion that I did it. I am especially happy for our team and staff that we are playing such a good game and getting the three points,” he said.
He went on to also indicate that even though he was going to miss his team’s next fixture, he was sure his other teammates would see out a good result at the end of the day.
“I can’t remember when I scored three more times. It must have been a long time ago. I like it. It is a shame that I will have to miss next week’s game, but I have every confidence in our team.”
