Nigerian youngsters resort to Twitter to ask English football clubs for trials, and it’s paying off
Some young Nigerian footballers in search of greener pastures in the international scene have resorted to social media to seek a trial session from English football clubs.
Richard Allison and Kenechukwu Jonathan, are two young footballers who have adopted the method and it seems to be working for them.
Allison recently took to his Twitter handle on Thursday 29 August, to reach out to an Irish club Cork City requesting for a trial session to be considered for recruitment, the club responded and put him on a condition to rack up 50,000 retweets before his request could be granted.
Not willing to let what could be likened to a golden opportunity to play with a foreign club slip away, Allison appealed to his followers and other Twitter users to help him out in a bid to get his trial with the League of Ireland club.
Please everyone help me achieve my dream
I’m a Nigerian based footballer @CorkCityFC promised to offer me a free trial with them only if I can get 50,000 rt’s
Please I know it’s tough but I’m pleading ??if u come across this in ur TL pls do well to RT ???? @CorkCityFC pic.twitter.com/CBXK6CqAmV— RICHARD ALLISON (@RICHARD_ALI_SON) August 30, 2019
Trust Nigerians to be very supportive in such situation, it didn’t take long to rally support for Allison by Saturday 31 August, they have helped Allison garnered more than the 50,000 retweets target set by Cork City to give him a trial which may see him become one of their players.
The club later revealed that they’ve emailed the player in a bid to help with his visa process.

Jonathan on the other hand also reached out to two Lincolnshire clubs in England on Twitter in a bid to land a trial.
He asked Boston United and Grantham Town on Twitter how many retweets he would need to get a chance for trial.
So far neither side has responded, but Jonathan, who described himself as a midfielder and says he dreams of representing his country one day, has had luck elsewhere.
Ilkeston Town football club in Derbyshire, England, who play in the BetVictor Northern Premier South East Division along with Lincoln United, responded saying he needs 1,000 retweets for a trial.
Like Allison, Jonathan has also succeeded and it seems the young lads have good testaments about how social media can help
Jonathan has garnered 1,300 retweets after appealing to Twitter users for help in reaching the target.
However, there is now another obstacle standing in his way – getting to the United Kingdom.

Ilkeston have remained true to their word and have put out a post asking people if they can help fund his accommodation and flight costs.
Kenechukwu has done it. Who can help fly him out and sort his accommodation? Congratulations @Kenechukwu_10 ? https://t.co/koarT7Nm5m
