Lionel Messi breaks record in Champions League defeat against Man City
Barcelona star striker Lionel Messi on Tuesday night broke a new record for amount of goals scored in a group stage of Champions League despite his team suffering 3-1 defeat against Manchester City.
Messi scored the opening goal at the Etihad stadium before Pep Guardiola’s City stunned the Spanish champions with two goals from Iikay Guendogan and a single goal from Kevin de Bruyne.
The Argentine’s goal makes it his 54th group-stage goal in the Champions League that took him above Real Madrid legend Raul.
It also took his tally to an incredible 50 goals in 2016 – four more than team-mate Luis Suarez and six more than Ballon d’Or rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
