Kano court jails man four months, orders 40 strokes for thuggery

Federal High Court in Lagos where man was remanded over alleged tax fraud

A Sharia Court sitting at Kofar Kudu in Kano Municipal has sentenced Usman Salisu to four months in prison without an option of fine and 40 strokes of the cane for thuggery and unlawful possession of a weapon.

The presiding judge, Shamsuddeen Ado Abdullahi Unguwar Gini, handed down the sentence after Salisu pleaded guilty to the two charges brought against him.

Salisu was initially arraigned by the police on allegations of thuggery, illegal possession of a weapon and causing bodily harm.

According to the complaint lodged with the police by Abubakar Muhammad, the defendant allegedly injured him by cutting off part of his finger and subsequently took N11,000 from him.

However, when the charges were presented in court, Salisu admitted to engaging in thuggery and possessing a weapon but denied the allegation that he took money from the complainant.
