Yemi Alade gets slams, cheers for comment over depression
Singer Yemi Alade was subjected to slams and cheers from Twitter users over her recent comments on the delicate topic, depression.
Mental health is becoming a centre for debate across the world, especially on social media, due to a number of deaths occurring as a result of depression.
Speaking on her verified Twitter handle on Sunday, the Shekere singer opined that depression can be caused by thinking about what one lacks.
In the since-deleted tweet, the Single and Searching singer advised her 758K followers to ensure that their focus is directed on what they have.
“Depression comes from thinking about what YOU DON’T HAVE, and what is wrong with the world! Let’s focus on what we have more, please,” she tweeted.
The tweet has since attracted mixed reactions from numerous Twitter users and while some believe that the 31-year-old international music star is out of line with her comment, others think otherwise.
Here are some of the reactions below:
Our realities differ Sha.
Maybe Yemi Alade was once depressed because she focused on the things she lacked and now she knows better.
What she may not know is that Depression is a subject on its own. Away from what you have or have not.— Isha_Oni? (@AishaOniye) January 24, 2021

I just saw the deleted tweet from Yemi Alade , depression is not a function of you focusing on what you don’t have, and know you can’t make yourself depressed. If you’re coping with depression please speak to your mental health care provider or send a dm

yemi alade’s tweet is what depression really is about. act woke and deny it but that’s your problem, depression comes when you “LACK” and worry about it too much.. lack of love? lack of money? no family? dead relatives? bad grades? no rest? could be lack of anything
