A Los Angeles judge has ruled that Ivanna Lisette Ortiz, the Florida woman accused of opening fire outside Rihanna’s Beverly Hills home, is mentally competent to stand trial, allowing the criminal case against her to proceed.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Maria Cavalluzzi made the ruling Tuesday after a court-ordered competency evaluation kept the proceedings on hold for more than four months.
The psychiatric evaluations conducted as part of the assessment have been sealed and are not publicly available.
Authorities allege that Ortiz, 36, drove a white Tesla into Rihanna’s neighborhood on March 8 before firing approximately 20 rounds from an assault-style rifle. Prosecutors have alleged that the incident “put numerous lives at risk.”
Rihanna, her partner A$AP Rocky and their three children were reportedly inside the property at the time. According to a police document reviewed by City News Service, investigators found bullet holes or impact marks on several areas, including the exterior gate, a fence, the windshield of an Airstream trailer, part of the patio and an exterior wall of a nursery.
The Associated Press reported that Rihanna and A$AP Rocky were inside the trailer during the shooting, while their children were in the nursery.
Ortiz now faces 14 felony charges. The allegations include one count of attempted murder, 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and three counts involving the alleged shooting at an inhabited dwelling, vehicle or other target, according to court records.
The competency ruling removes a major procedural hurdle that had prevented the case from moving ahead while Ortiz underwent evaluation.
Ortiz had previously faced arrests in Florida, according to earlier reporting by the Los Angeles Times. Her history includes a 2013 bankruptcy case, a 2021 arrest on suspicion of careless driving and a 2023 arrest on suspicion of domestic violence and battery.
Authorities have not identified a known personal relationship between Ortiz and Rihanna. However, Ortiz had frequently posted about celebrities on social media. In February, she shared a meme alleging that Rihanna had AIDS and tagged the singer in a Facebook post that told her to “say something to me directly instead of sneaking around.”
The case is scheduled to return to court Wednesday morning at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, according to court records.
