A young woman was beaten up, raped and stuffed into a travel suitcase by a man late Monday evening.
“The woman is currently recuperating in the hospital,”said the Xiangtan City police in a statement.
The incident occurred in central China’s Hunan Province.
The suspect, 23-year-old Pan was nabbed by the police shortly after the victim was rescued.
Police said Pan put the victim, who was unconscious after being beaten and raped into the travel suitcase. He was intending to dump the suitcase when some passers-by heard the woman’s screaming from inside the suitcase and stopped him, police said. Police said they were alarmed at 9:31pm and arrived the scene near the Muyuhu Lake in minutes.
Witnesses said the victim was all naked when they opened the suitcase to free her. One of her rescuers pulled off his clothes to get the woman covered.
The suspect fled and dived into the lake to escape when others stopped him. Witnesses said he had swum and struggled in the waters for more than an hour before he was seized. Police said the man was caught from the lake at about 11:20pm.
The man is currently under medical treatment and the case is still under investigation, police said.
