Victor Boniface named Bundesliga Rookie of the month

Bayer Leverkusen Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has been named the Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for August.

The club announced this on their X (formerly Twitter) on Friday.

The 22-year-old finished ahead of Xavi Simons of RB Leipzig and German-born Nigerian goalkeeper Noah Atubolu of Freiburg to win the award.

Boniface made a scoring debut for Leverkusen in their 3-2 win over Leipzig on August 6, providing the assist for the team’s first goal.

He then scored two goals in a 3-0 win away to Borussia Monchengladbach on August 20.

Boniface’s performances in August have earned him a call-up to the Nigeria national team for their final Group A 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against São Tomé and Principe on Sunday.

The Bundesliga Rookie of the Month award is given to the best young player in the league each month. Boniface is the first Nigerian player to win the award.

Boniface is also in contention for the Bundesliga Player of the Month award for August which will be announced on September 15.
