Renowned Nigerian communication scholar and veteran journalist, Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, has died at the age of 85.
According to The PUNCH, Sobowale died on Thursday morning, October 8, 2026, as confirmed in a statement issued by a family member, Akinniyi Sowunmi.
The statement, titled “Transition to Glory,” described his death as a major loss to Nigeria’s media and communication community.
“This is a very sad day for us in the Communication Community in Nigeria and especially for us at the Association of Communication Scholars & Professionals in Nigeria,” the statement read.
“Our father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026.”
Idowu Sobowale’s career and contributions
Sobowale was widely respected for his contributions to journalism education, media research and professional development in Nigeria.
He served as the pioneer Dean of the School of Communication at Lagos State University and previously worked as a journalist with the Daily Times.
Beyond academics, Sobowale contributed to public service, serving as Special Adviser on Education under former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande.
He also served as Commissioner for Education during President Bola Tinubu’s tenure as Lagos State governor.
His academic career helped shape generations of Nigerian journalists and communication professionals.
In September 2026, the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria honoured him with a fellowship in recognition of his contributions to journalism and communication scholarship.
Sobowale was also the chairman of the association’s Board of Trustees.
The family has not disclosed the cause of his death, while funeral arrangements are expected to be announced later.
His passing marks the loss of one of Nigeria’s respected figures in journalism education and communication research.
