UPDATED: Police arrest suspects as one dies in Osun Mosque attack

The Osun State Police Command on Monday said some suspects have been arrested following the attack on worshippers at Kamorudeen Society Central Mosque, Osogbo, by people believed to be followers of the Esubiyi masquerade.

The command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, in a chat with The PUNCH on Monday said ‘some people have been arrested in connection with the incident. An investigation is on already. One person was killed but his identity is not available.

She, however, declined to disclose the number of suspects in police custody.

Esubiyi masquerade and his followers had allegedly attacked the worshippers in front of the mosque in Oluode Ayahin, Osogbo, during a prayer session and killed one of them.

A man, identified as Moshood Salawudeen, was reportedly shot dead, while nine other worshippers were said to have been injured in the attack.

The masquerade and his followers were said to be passing through Oluode Aranhin’s compound, where the mosque is located at the time worshippers were having prayers under a canopy near the mosque on Sunday when the incident happened.

The attackers were also said to have damaged the windows and doors of the mosque with stones.

The Chief Imam of the mosque, Alhaji Quoseem Yunus said there was no previous disagreement with the masquerade, adding that the team had initially passed through the area without attacking the worshippers.

He said, “We were outside our mosque, having special prayers on Sunday when the masquerade and his men appeared from afar. Four policemen were with them.

“They passed us by and moved down. They later returned to where we all sat and started pelting us with stones. They later shot at us and used machete on us. One person was killed. We have taken the corpse to UNIOSUN Teaching Hospital Morgue. Nine others are receiving treatment in other hospitals in Osogbo.”
