UCL: Bayern, Man City share spoils with Atletico, Porto

Published

Defending champions Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw by Spanish side, Atletico Madrid in Tuesday night’s Champions League match.

Although already qualified, Bayern fielded a fit side to face Atletico who require a win to keep RB Salsburg and Lomomotive Moscow at bay with only one qualification slot available.

Portuguese prodigy, Joao Felix out the home side in front early in the first half after 26 minutes of end to end match-up.

Bayern still controlled the game despite benching big names – Serge Gnabry and Thomas Mueller, with 55% ball possession against the home side’s 45%.

Atletico came close in the 58th minute with Felix’s 12-yards shot striking the woodwork after Llorente and Correa combine to tee up the forward in the box. Llorente was, however,  offside in the build-up.

The Spanish side, however, became the architect of their own downfall later in the game when Felipe brought down substitute, Muller in the box and the referee points to the spot.

The German stepped up to the challenge in the absence of Lewandowski and confidently beat Oblak as he slots the ball in the bottom-right corner.

Both sides shared the spoils, swinging open the qualification spot, though with Atletico at an advantage with six points.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were held to a goalless draw against last season’s Europa League Champions, Sevilla.

Although both teams have booked their place in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League they will battle for the top stop.
The outcome of their last group games against Krasnodar and Rennes respectively will determine who ends Group E first or second.
