Two MOUOAU students drown at departmental pool party in Umuahia (Graphic image)
Two students of the Veterinary Medicine in Micheal Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike in Abia state reportedly found dead in a swimming pool on Sunday morning in Kenvilles hotel Umuahia the state capital
It was gathered that the students identified as Egwu David said to be in 100 level and Ibe Johnson, 300 level had attended a party organized by the departmental director of socials identified only as Alexander, on Saturday.
Some students in the department who spoke under the condition of anonymity said the news of their deaths was received with shock when the information reached the department that the deceased bodies were seen floating in the pool.
They alleged that David and Johnson must have drowned as a result of drunkenness before entering the pool.
The University Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Adamna Odefa has confirmed that the deceased were students of the institution.
She said although the hotel management had yet to notify the school management of the indecent, fleers from the deceased co-students has it that they went swimming after taking alcoholic beverages during the party.
She said, “it was unfortunate that incident was true and the University management is sadden about it.
“The parents of the deceased will be notified about the indecent. The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.
“There is nothing really wrong with young people organizing parties and other social activities, but we advise them to reduce their intake of beverage during such parties”.
Meanwhile, some students have alleged that Policemen had invaded the hostel of the deceased students on Monday morning and arrested students because of the incident.
But when contacted, the Police Public Relations officer in the state Mr. Geoffrey Ogbonna, confirmed the death of two undergraduates but he denied the allegation that Policemen arrested some students at the deceased students’ hotel.
He said, “we have received the report of the two undergraduates who died in a swimming pool. But the command did not make any arrest at their hostel on Monday”.
