More than 24 hours after the Federal Government suspended the microblogging platform, the two Twitter accounts of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari are clearly still in existence.

The development is coming hours after the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister Justice, Abubakar Malami also threatened to punish violators of the sanction.

Although no tweet has come in through the two Twitter pages – @MBuhari and @NGRGovernment in the last 24 hours, many tweeps have wondered why the government is still keen on maintaining the accounts after its pronouncement.

This is in contrast to the Twitter account of First Lady Aisha Buhari, which was wiped clean in the early hours of Saturday following the suspension by the government.

Recall that Buhari’s verified Twitter account, which was opened in December 2014, has about 4.1 million followers while the other Nigerian account government was created in January 2015 and has 2.3 million followers.

Malami had on Saturday given a strict directive to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation at the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to “swing into action and commence in earnest the process of prosecution of violators of the Federal Government de-activation of operations of Twitter in Nigeria”.

He directed that the DPPF should liase with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy, National Communications Commission to punish offenders without delay.
