Published

Swedish photographer Alex Dawson has clinched the prestigious title of Underwater Photographer of the Year 2024 for his captivating image titled ‘Whale Bones’.

The mesmerizing photograph depicts a diver submerged beneath the Greenland ice sheet, exploring the skeletal remains of a minke whale.

According to BBC reports, Dawson’s ‘Whale Bones’ triumphed over a staggering 6,500 submissions worldwide.

Chairing the judging panel, Alex Mustard praised the remarkable composition of ‘Whale Bones’ and emphasized the arduous conditions under which it was captured.

Mustard described the image as a poignant portrayal of a breath-hold diver navigating the depths beneath the Greenland ice sheet to witness the remains of slaughtered whales.

He underscored the urgent need for humanity to reassess its impact on the planet’s wildlife, noting that wild animal populations have dwindled significantly due to human activity.

“Whale Bones was photographed in the toughest conditions, as a breath-hold diver descends below the Greenland ice sheet to bear witness to the carcasses. The diver’s suit and torch give it a ‘visiting alien’ feel. The composition flows effortlessly and takes your eye on the right journey to tell the story,”

“Photographed in the toughest conditions, a breath-hold diver descends below the Greenland ice sheet to bear witness to slaughtered whales. The masterful composition invites me to consider our impact on the great creatures of this planet. Since the rise of humans, wild animals have declined by 85%. Today, just 4% of mammals are wildlife, the remaining 96% are humans and our livestock. Our way needs to change to find a balance with nature,” Mustard said.

Taking to Instagram to express his gratitude, Dawson shared his elation at being bestowed with the prestigious award.

He credited his success to the support of his family, friends, and sponsors. Dawson also extended his congratulations to fellow winners across various categories, acknowledging their exceptional contributions to underwater photography.
