The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has urged Nigerians to prioritise their health and safety during the Christmas season by making responsible and drug-free choices.
The appeal was made on Thursday in a Christmas message shared on the agency’s official X page by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd).
Marwa extended goodwill messages to Nigerians and commended NDLEA officers across the country for their commitment to the fight against drug abuse.
“Your dedication and sacrifice in protecting our communities from drug abuse are deeply appreciated,” he said.
He called on members of the public to use the festive period to make healthy decisions and avoid the use of illicit drugs.
“Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria. Wishing you all a peaceful, joyous, and drug-free Christmas,” Marwa added.
The NDLEA’s warning comes amid rising concerns over drug abuse in the country. According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime World Drug Report 2025, Nigeria’s drug use prevalence stands at 14.4 per cent, almost three times the global average.
The report estimates that about 14.3 million Nigerians aged between 15 and 64 use drugs.
Marwa stressed that public vigilance and personal responsibility remain key to reducing drug-related harm and promoting community wellbeing, especially during festive celebrations.
