JUST IN: Chelsea beat 10-man Palmeiras to become world champions
Chelsea have been crowned world football champions after defeating 10-Palmeiras 2-1 in the Club World Cup final on Saturday.
Kai Havertz became the hero for Thomas Tuchel’s side again by scoring the winning goal three minutes to the end of extra time.
Romelu Lukaku who ended his goal drought in the semifinals gave The Blues a 1-0 lead after 55 minutes.
The lead lasted for only nine minutes as Raphael Veiga ensured that the Brazilian side force Chelsea into extra time when he converted a penalty to make it 1-1.
Chelsea were awarded a penalty in the 117th minute and Havertz who scored the winner in last season’s Champions League final scored again to make Tuchel’s side the world champions.
Palmeiras were reduced to 10 men before the end of the game when Luan Garcia was shown a red card (120’+6).
The Blues avoided the agony of a penalty shootout which could have swayed the game either way.
