Spain sacks women’s team coach amid Rubiales scandal
The Spanish Football Federation has announced that it has fired Jorge Vilda, the national team’s coach since 2015, as part of a series of restructuring measures to improve governance in the wake of the scandal rocking the head of the football federation.
The federation announced the sack of Jorge Vilda in a statement it released on Tuesday
“The Royal Spanish Football Federation… has decided to dispense with the services of Jorge Vilda as sports director and women’s national team coach,” the RFEF said in a statement.
The Spanish Football Federation also apologized for the “totally unacceptable behavior” of its president, Luis Rubiales, after he kissed Spain midfielder Jenni Hermoso during the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 medal ceremony.
In a letter signed by its interim president Pedro Rocha, the RFEF offered its “most sincere apologies… for the totally unacceptable behaviour of its highest institutional representative during the final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 and in the moments that followed“.
The Spanish government has demanded a “transparent and urgent” investigation into Rubiales’ actions.
The RFEF has extended its apology to FIFA, UEFA, and especially the Spanish national women’s team players.
