At least six people sustained injuries following a powerful earthquake that struck northern Japan on Tuesday, a day after a major tremor shook the region and triggered small tsunami waves, according to INQUIRER.NET.
Authorities confirmed that despite the intensity of the quake, there was no significant structural damage reported, even though tsunami waves reaching up to 80 centimeters (31 inches) were observed along coastal areas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a separate warning indicating a heightened possibility of a potential megaquake — defined as a seismic event of magnitude 8.0 or higher — following Monday’s 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
The earlier quake occurred in the Pacific Ocean near the northern Iwate Prefecture, sending strong tremors across wide areas.
The shaking was powerful enough to be felt in Tokyo, located several hundred kilometres from the epicentre, with high-rise buildings swaying as the seismic waves rippled through the capital.
