Scientists from Stockholm University, the University of Mainz and the University of Arizona have discovered Europe’s oldest living tree.

They said can be seen in the highlands of northern Greece.

Adonis started growing in the Pindos mountains around the year 941 – more than 100 years before the Battle of Hastings,” the scientists stated.

More finding revealed that when the tree was 250 years old Oxford University was founded, and it turned 1,000 during the Second World War.

The leader of the group, Dr Paul Krusic, speaking on the discovery said: “It is quite remarkable that this large, complex and impressive organism has survived so long in such an inhospitable environment, in a land that has been civilised for over 3,000 years.

“I am impressed, in the context of western civilisation, all the human history that has surrounded this tree, all the empires, the Byzantine, the Ottoman, all the people living in this region.

“So many things could have led to its demise. Fortunately, this forest has been basically untouched for over a thousand years.”

It was gathered that Adonis isn’t alone in the area as more than a dozen other trees aged at least 1,000 years old were found in the mountain range.
