Senate passes bill to establish NYSC trust fund

The Nigerian Senate has approved a bill aiming to establish the National Youth Service Corps Trust Fund, marking a significant milestone for the scheme’s development.

Sponsored by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, representing Ekiti South, the bill passed its third reading, signaling a strong commitment to supporting the NYSC and its corps members.

The proposed legislation aims to create a sustainable source of funding for the NYSC, particularly focusing on bolstering skill acquisition programs for corps members. This initiative seeks to equip them with practical skills that can enhance their employability and entrepreneurial abilities.

Adaramodu highlighted the significance of the bill, emphasizing its potential to transform the NYSC and benefit Nigerians. He stressed the need to uphold the original objectives of the NYSC, which include fostering patriotism and national unity among Nigerian youths.

“The decision to establish the National Youth Service Trust Fund was conceived by stakeholders, including the 36 state governments and the FCT administration,” Adaramodu stated.

The senator also assured that the trust fund bill would be safeguarded against abuse, unlike some existing social intervention programs. He outlined the structure of the fund, which incorporates various checks and balances to ensure transparency and accountability.

“Not only that, this is a scheme for young adults, and part of the young adults will be represented on the board of trustees,” Adaramodu explained. “Procurement is not going to be solely done by even the DG. So, it is going to be something that several others will be part of.”
