Ruthless Germany stun defending champions Portugal 4-2
Portugal’s quest to defend their EURO 2020 trophy hit the bricks on Saturday after Germany handed them their first defeat of the tourney with a 4-2 comeback victory at the Allianz Arena.
Cristiano Ronaldo poked the German hive in the 15th minute against the run of play but the lead only lasted for 20 minutes as Joachim Low’s side took the lead with goals in the space of four minutes.
Portugal slipped in defence as Premier League’s Player of the Season, Rúben Dias concede an own goal in the 35th minute before Raphaël Guerreiro horrendously gave the Germans the lead with another own goal four minutes after to end the first half 2-1.
The Germans were more commanding in the second half and extended their lead to 3-1 courtesy of Chelsea’s Champions League winner, Kai Havertz in the 51st minute before Robin Gosens made it 4-1 nine minutes later.
Liverpool’s Diogo Jota halved the deficit in the 67th minute but it wasn’t enough to pull a comeback for the Portuguese whose qualification to the next round now hand in the balance.
Portugal would need to defeat France in their final Group F game if they are to make it to the last 16 of the competition.
