Ukraine secured a 2-1 victory over Sweden at Hampden Park, Scotland to book a place in the quarterfinals of the EURO 2020 championship on Tuesday night.

Andriy Shevchenko made two changes to his Ukraine side that lost 1-0 to Austria in their previous match; Vitaliy Mykolenko and Ruslan Malinovskiy were replaced by Serhiy Kryvtsov and Taras Stepanenko in the lineup.

Meanwhile, Sweden manager, Janne Andersson, introduced only Dejan Kulusevski to the starting line-up from the side that beat Poland 3-2 in the final group game, as Robin Quaison dropped to the bench.

The last meeting between Sweden and Ukraine was in EURO 2012, with Ukraine coming from behind to win 2-1 thanks to a brace from current manager Andriy Shevchenko.

Shevchenko’s men started on a strong foot and immediately asked questions of Sweden but Robin Olsen was hand to deny Roman Yaremchuk an early goal.

The Ukrainian however refused to be denied in the 27th minute when Andriy Yarmolenko teed up Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko to score the opener with a volley that landed in the top corner despite Olsen touch in an attempt to keep it out.

Emil Forsberg restored parity for the Swedes two minutes before the break to keep Andersson’s men in contention for a place in the last eight.

Both sides remained inseparable throughout the second half forcing the game into extra time where Sweden lost Marcus Danielsson in the first half after a horrific tackle on Artem Besyedin who was forced off after the challenge.

The game was moving into penalties with three minutes added time but Ukraine struck at the death through Artem Dovbyk whose header from a Zinchenko cross sealed the win for the Ukrainian.

Shevchenko’s men enter the quarterfinals of the competition where they would face England who defeated Germany 2-0 in the previous knockout match.
