PENTA had the Mexico City crowd firmly behind him when he challenged Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 episode of WWE RAW.
Performing in front of his home-country audience at Arena CDMX, PENTA put together a strong showing against one of WWE’s biggest stars. Despite the enormous support from the crowd, however, he was unable to dethrone Reigns.
The champion ultimately secured the victory after hitting PENTA with a Superman Punch before following up with a Spear to retain the title.
The decision surprised some fans, particularly given the atmosphere inside the arena and the opportunity WWE had to give PENTA a major championship moment in Mexico. A recent report, however, suggests that the decision was influenced by WWE’s plans for Reigns beyond the Mexico City event.
Roman Reigns Reportedly Being Protected for Future Matchup
During a recent Pwinsider Q&A, Mike Johnson was asked why WWE did not have PENTA win the championship in Mexico City.
Johnson pointed toward WWE’s apparent plans for Reigns and suggested that the company wants to keep the former Universal Champion strong heading into a significant future program.
«“Roman Reigns is earmarked to face Oba Femi at WrestleMania 43 in Saudi Arabia (barring injury or stupidity), so my thought process is that WWE is going to want to keep him as strong as possible.”»
If those plans remain intact, keeping Reigns undefeated in the championship match would allow WWE to continue building him toward the reported showdown with Oba Femi.
The information remains dependent on WWE’s plans changing, as wrestling storylines and long-term creative decisions can be altered at any time.
PENTA Reportedly Makes Strong Impression Backstage
While PENTA did not leave Mexico City with the championship, his performance may have benefited his standing within WWE.
WrestleVotes Radio recently reported that PENTA made a significant impression internally following his match with Reigns. According to the report, several people within WWE now believe the Mexican star has the ability to perform at the main-event level.
That could become important for PENTA moving forward, especially after receiving such a strong reaction from the Mexico City audience and competing competitively against Reigns.
WWE Could Revisit Reigns vs. PENTA
There is reportedly no immediate rematch between PENTA and Reigns on the schedule. However, the matchup appears to remain an option WWE could return to in the future.
The reaction to their Mexico City encounter, combined with the reported positive backstage response to PENTA’s performance, gives WWE a potential storyline to revisit later.
