Rock Hall of Fame: Nigerians give Fela 16k votes lead over Tina Turner, Jay Z, others

Afrobeat legend, Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, popularly called Fela Anikulapo Kuti has taken over 16k vote lead in the race for the 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The iconic singer who passed away on Aug. 2, 1997, who moved from the bottom of the poll to third behind veteran singer Tina Turner and Fod Fighters is currently number one with over 70k votes after Nigerians canvassed for support for the music icon on Twitter.

Fela was nominated alongside JAY-Z, Dionne Warwick, Foo Fighters, The Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Carole King, Mary J. Blige, Tina Turner, LL Cool J, Chaka Khan, Todd Rundgren, Kate Bush, the New York Dolls, Devo and Rage Against the Machine.

The Shuffering and Shmiling singer currently has 73,500 votes while Tina Turner is in second place with 56,670 votes. Foo Fighters stands third with 45,055 votes while Iron Maiden is fourth with 34,972  Votes.

Others are Carole King – 33,851 votes, The Go-Go’s – 30,323 votes, Rage Against the Machine – 27,023 votes, Chaka Khan- 23,022 votes, Dionne Warwick – 22,731 votes, Devo – 22,325 votes, Todd Rundgren – 21,344 votes, Mary J. Blige – 20,549 votes,  JAY-Z – 20,161 votes.

Also, LL Cool J has 18,141 votes, while New York Dolls and Kate Bush have 14,939 and 14,167 votes respectively.

Winners of the 36th Annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony which will take in Cleveland, Ohio will be inducted in May 2021.

Nigerians can vote for up to five nominees daily from today till the 30th of April on the Rock Halls website until April 30th.
