Grayson Waller has dismissed claims that his return to WWE NXT was the result of a demotion, explaining that he returned to the developmental brand after being personally asked to make the move.
The Australian wrestler recently returned to NXT following several years on WWE’s main roster. Waller initially gained prominence on the developmental show in 2021 before moving to SmackDown in 2023. Since coming back to NXT, he has quickly made an impact by capturing the NXT World Championship and establishing himself as a leading figure in the men’s division.
Despite the perception among some fans that his NXT return marked a backward step in his career, Waller has offered a completely different account of why the move happened.
During a recent appearance on the “Busted Open Radio” podcast, Waller directly addressed the belief that WWE had sent him back to NXT because the company had lost faith in him. According to Waller, the decision came after a conversation with a highly respected individual within WWE who specifically wanted him back on the brand.
“I didn’t get sent back to NXT. There’s a narrative online that Grayson Waller got demoted. ‘Oh, I have to be on national television every Tuesday. That’s so tough.’ But there’s a narrative online that I got demoted. That’s not true.”
Waller explained that the move followed a phone call in which he was asked to meet with someone whose opinion he values highly. He said the NXT men’s division needed someone capable of creating excitement and bringing a different level of energy to the championship picture.
“There was a phone call from someone who asked to meet with me. I spoke with them, and this is a person I respect more than anyone. His opinion means more than anyone. And he asked me to come back here. He asked me because the men’s division wasn’t ready. He didn’t have anyone. No one was causing havoc. Actually, everyone wanted the title. No one needed it.”
Waller also emphasized his personal connection to NXT and its championship, noting that WWE officials were aware of how much the brand and professional wrestling meant to him. That connection ultimately made his decision to return an easy one.
“He knows how much I love this place; he knows how much I love wrestling. He knows how much this title meant to me because I never had it. So he asked me to come back and I said, ‘Hell yeah.’”
