The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has distributed relief items to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Niger state as part of an effort to cushion the effect of the COVID-19.

The relief items, which were distributed at the IDP camp in Gwada Central Primary School, Shiroro, was led by Sen. Basheer Garba, Federal Commissioner in NCFRMI.

Garba, who was represented by Mr. Jelani Inuwa, a senior official in the commission, said the items included rice, beans, maize, millet, salt, oil, and tomatoes, among others.

Garba tasked the IDPs and other vulnerable persons to learn skills and engage themselves in economic activities that would improve their livelihood.

The commissioner disclosed that some IDPs trained by the commission in various vocational skills were doing well in their businesses.

“No matter how little, try to engage yourselves on meaningful skills that will better your life.

“Only last week, we launched facemasks produced by some NCFRMI trained IDPs in Abuja for their own use and for sale to the general public.

“I want to advise the IDPs to engage in economic activities no matter how small because the little beginning can become something great with perseverance,” he said.

He expressed worries over the rising cases of displaced persons across the country, attributing recent cases to flooding and banditry.

He said that NCFRMI would find a durable solution to such disasters through integration and resettlement.

“We have been to many states recently and today we are happy to be in Minna, Niger state to begin the distribution of commodities to support IDPs,” he added.

In his remarks, Alhaji Ahmed Inga, Director-General of the State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), who was represented by Alhaji Salihu Garba, Director, Relief and Rehabilitation, NSEMA commended the Federal Government for the gesture.

He called for more security intervention to end banditry in the state.
