PSG eliminate defending champions Bayern from Champions League

Defending Champions Bayern Munich were knocked out by last year’s runner-up, Paris Saint Germain, from the Champions League despite a 1-0 victory at the Parc Des Princes.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting ‘s lone goal was not enough for the Bavarians who were without top striker, Robert Lewandowski.

Lewandowski recently returned to training after picking up an injury during the international break last month.

The French giants came into the game with three vital away goals after the 3-2 win at the Allianz Arena last week and needed a home win or at least a draw.

The Parisian side failed to repeat last week’s form as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe’s attempted to break down the sturdy defence of Bayern failed.

However, the French champions were stung by their former striker, Chupo-Moting in the 40th minute, taking the game to 3-3 on aggregate.

Although PSG lost on the night, they advanced to the semi-finals of the Champions League by defeating Bayern Munich on away goals.

The French outfit avenged their loss in the final from last season after doing the hard work in Germany in the first leg.

Mbappe’s brace and Marquinhos’ strike gave them a comfortable cushion but Hansi Flick’s men were unable to muster a second to turn the tie in their favour.

PSG have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the second season in a row, after managing to reach the last four only once in their previous 11 campaigns in the competition before that (their first in 1994-95).

Bayern Munich are the third reigning Champions League winners in a row to fail to reach at least the semi-final stage in the following season in the competition, something that has not happened since four successive teams failed between 2004-05 & 2007-8 (Porto, Liverpool, Barcelona, Milan).

PSG failed to score at home in the Champions League for the first time in 24 games, since a 0-0 draw with Real Madrid in October 2015.
