The Oyo State Police Command has reacted to the alleged rape and murder of a student identified as Grace Oshiagwu in Ibadan, the state capital.

21-year-old Oshiagwu was a National Diploma (ND) 1 student of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki before her death.

It was learned that the attack on Oshiagwu happened on Saturday at Idi-ori Area, off Shasha Expressway, Akinyele Local Government Area in Ibadan.

The incident occurred just two weeks after 18-year old Barakat Bello and 29-year old Azeezat Shomuyiwa were also murdered in Akinyele area of the city.

Speaking on the murder of the student, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Olugbenga Fadeyi, said the operatives of the command had swung into action on the incident.

Fadeyi, however, did not confirm that Oshiagwu was raped.

He urged the public to assist with information to apprehend the killers.

He said:

“One Grace Oshiagwu ‘f’ aged 21 years was macheted on her head in a church mission building at Idi-ori Area Shasha off expressway by unknown assailant (s) on Saturday, June 13th about 3.00 pm.

“Investigation has commenced into the matter and the Police tactical teams
are on the trail of the assailant(s).

“While efforts intensified, we want to continue to solicit for credible information from members of the communities around the area and the general public to unravel the misery behind these dastard killings.”

The corpse of Oshiagwu had been deposited at Adeoyo State Hospital Ring Road, Ibadan for autopsy.

Recall that the federal government, on Tuesday, through the Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Tallen, vowed to take decisive action against rapists by ensuring the adoption of strict implementation of relevant laws.

Speaking on Friday, President, Major General (Retd.) Muhammadu Buhari in his Democracy Day address to Nigerians also condemned the rising sexual violence cases in the country.

“I am particularly upset at recent incidents of rape, especially of very young girls.

“The Police are pursuing these cases with a view to bringing perpetrators of these heinous crimes to swift justice,” Mr Buhari said.
