The Ondo State Police Command has called for calm amid protests by youths against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The police advised the youths to remain composed and act within the law during their demonstrations against the anti-graft agency.

In a statement on Monday, Ondo police spokesperson Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya urged the youths to direct their grievances to the appropriate authorities.

Omisanya said, “The command recognizes the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful protest, but these rights must be exercised without breach of public order and non-infringement on the rights of other law-abiding citizens.

“Police owe a duty to protect the rights of all citizens and foreign nationals resident within or transiting through the state at all times. We appeal to the good people of Ondo state, especially the youths who claimed to have been adversely affected by the sting operation, to act with restraint and comport themselves within the ambits of the laws of the land.”

The call for calm follows an EFCC raid on two clubs in Akure on Saturday, during which 127 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested. The raid has sparked social media allegations of assault and theft by EFCC operatives.

Currently, residents are protesting on the streets in parts of Akure, demanding the unconditional release of the suspects arrested at the clubs.
