Photos: Chad holds late President Idriss Deby’s funeral
Thousands of Chadians turned up for the funeral ceremony for late President Idriss Deby Itno at Chad’s capital, N’Djamena.
Recall that the late president passed away last weekend as a result of wounds sustained while leading his troops against a rebel offensive, according to the army.
Deby who ruled the African country for 30 years was vital in the fight against the Sahel’s jihadist insurgency, according to reports as the French Government and regional allies voiced backing for his son and successor, Mahamat Idriss Deby.
Despite security threats from rebels, Al Jazeera reports that French President Emmanuel Macron and several African leaders were in attendance at the funeral.
European Union’s High Representative, Josep Borrell, was also present at the state funeral for the late Chadian president, according to Reuters.
