Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has warned that commissioners who are not doing well in their duties will be removed from office.
He gave this warning on Monday, June 2, during the opening of eight new duplexes at the Commissioners’ Quarters in Asaba.
Oborevwori made it clear that he would not sack all commissioners at once, as some people have been saying. However, he stressed that anyone who is not performing would be shown the door.
“If you are not performing, we will drop you, and that will not affect other people,” he said.
“Two or three people are not performing. I told one of them today at the chapel, ‘You are not doing well.’ You know, there are a lot of rumours that the governor wants to dissolve the exco. These people haven’t even heard from me; this just shows that people like to talk too much.”
The governor said every commissioner must show initiative and be seen doing the job they were given. He explained that commissioners must not wait for him to chase after them.
“As a commissioner, we don’t see you. You talk, carry your memo, and look for the governor, because the governor will not come looking for you,” he said.
“There are others who are seeking me out. You have to bring energy and initiative into your ministry.”
He added that any problems in a ministry would be blamed on the commissioner in charge.
“If there is a problem in any ministry, hold the commissioner responsible. Any ministry that is doing very well shows that the commissioner is doing very well,” Oborevwori said.
Speaking on development plans, the governor said many projects are ready to be commissioned and his government would continue to deliver until the end of the year.
“We have a lot of projects to inaugurate. I don’t think we will stop before the end of this year. We may not be able to inaugurate all of them, but I believe we will do our best,” he said.
He added that, like President Bola Tinubu did with the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, he plans to showcase all state projects in Warri for the public to see.
At the event, the Commissioner for Finance and Dean of Commissioners, Chief Fidelis Tilije, thanked the governor for building the new homes and asked for the old quarters to be renovated.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Housing, Mr. Godknows Angele, explained that the new project included eight duplexes, each with two boys’ quarters and lounges. He praised the governor for supporting the project to completion.
