Nursing student dies after severe burns in gas explosion
Miss Stella Mekiah, a student of Benue State School of Nursing and Midwifery in Makurdi who was severely burnt from a gas explosion in July 2017 has died.
Mekiah died on Tuesday, October 24th, 2017. She was at the intensive unit of the Federal Medical Centre, Apir.
The principal of the school, Mrs. Victoria Gusa said that the incident occurred as Mekiah, an 100 level student was cooking in her room in the hostel.
According to the principal, the explosion occurred at the third floor of the hostel and was caused by a faulty gas cylinder.
The fire burnt the ceiling and some items in the room before it was put out.
“Mekiah had returned from church and was preparing her lunch inside her hostel when the gas cooker exploded and burnt her severely.”the principal said.
