Nigerian bank employees to join NLC’s two-day strike action

Banking operations across Nigeria are set to grind to a halt as the National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions Employees has declared its support for the two-day strike action called by the Nigeria Labour Congress. The strike is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 5th, and Wednesday, September 6th, 2023.

NUBIFIE issued a statement outlining its decision, emphasizing that it aligns with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress. The NLC had resolved to stage the two-day strike following its National Executive Council meeting held on August 31, 2023.

The decision to join the strike is aimed at drawing the government’s attention to the alleged interference in the internal affairs of unions and addressing the challenging economic circumstances faced by Nigerians.

“In line with the communique issued after the meeting of the National Executive Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress  held on Thursday, August 31, 2023, that all affiliates should direct all its members to commence two days withdrawal of services from Tuesday and Wednesday, September 5 and 6, 2023,” the statement read.

The General Secretary of NUBIFIE, Mohammed I. Sheikh, signed the statement, reinforcing the union’s commitment to the strike action.
