The National Basketball Association landscape shifted dramatically following a blockbuster trade that sent Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Miami Heat, a move that could have significant long-term benefits for the Portland Trail Blazers.
According to ESPN insider Shams Charania, Milwaukee agreed to send Antetokounmpo and veteran forward Bobby Portis to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round draft picks, a pick swap, and a second-round selection.
“The Milwaukee Bucks are trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, 3 first-round picks (including No. 13), 1 pick swap and 1 second-rounder, sources tell ESPN.”
Although Portland is not directly involved in the transaction and competes in the Western Conference, the organization is positioned to benefit substantially from the fallout of Milwaukee’s decision to part ways with its franchise cornerstone.
The Trail Blazers currently control pick swaps with the Bucks in 2028 and 2030. With Milwaukee expected to enter a rebuilding phase following Antetokounmpo’s departure, those future assets could become increasingly valuable. Portland also owns rights tied to the most favorable selection among its own draft pick, Milwaukee’s, and Boston’s in upcoming years, further strengthening its long-term draft position.
Prior to the deal, Portland had been viewed as a potential third-team participant because of its control over those valuable draft assets. Reports suggested a larger framework may have emerged had the Blazers accepted a package involving Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown and future draft compensation. In that scenario, Brown would have been rerouted to Portland in exchange for the Bucks-related pick swaps, along with Shaedon Sharpe, Scoot Henderson, and Jerami Grant.
While a move for Brown no longer appears likely, the Blazers retain control of some of the league’s most coveted future draft assets. Milwaukee’s transition into a full rebuild has only enhanced the importance of those selections, potentially placing Portland in a strong position whenever the next star player becomes available on the trade market.
The organization now has flexibility in determining how to maximize the value of its draft capital. Portland could choose to pursue established talent immediately or continue holding the picks in anticipation of Milwaukee’s projected decline in the standings, which could further increase their worth.
Questions remain about the franchise’s next move, particularly as it currently lacks selections in this year’s draft. Nevertheless, the Trail Blazers possess a wide range of options as they continue building toward contention in the Pacific Northwest.
The 2026 NBA Draft is set to take place on Tuesday and Wednesday, with proceedings scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. PT on both nights.
