Navy nabs 14 criminals in Akwa Ibom
The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base in Ibaka, Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, has reported significant progress in its efforts to combat crime, with the apprehension of 14 suspects involved in various illicit activities.
The Commanding Officer of the base, Captain Uche Aneke, revealed to reporters that the suspects were nabbed for offenses ranging from smuggling to oil theft, cultism, economic sabotage, sea robbery, and other forms of criminality within the joint operations area (JOA).
Emphasizing the Navy’s staunch stance against maritime crimes, Captain Aneke stressed, “We have zero tolerance for maritime crimes and economic sabotage on Nigeria’s waterways.”
He further disclosed that the apprehended individuals had been handed over to appropriate security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.
Aneke attributed the success of the anti-crime operations to meticulous planning and effective execution, resulting in a relatively peaceful security situation in the area of operations.
The base’s commitment to curbing criminal activities has been bolstered by close collaboration with security stakeholders and the reinforcement of Operation Delta Sanity, of which FOB Ibaka is a vital part.
In a bid to strengthen intelligence gathering, FOB Ibaka has employed 35 civilian staff, ensuring their welfare by providing regular meals and compensation. Captain Aneke expressed gratitude to the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, for the support and resources that have facilitated the Navy’s efforts in ensuring safer waterways.
FOB Ibaka’s jurisdiction spans the eastern flanks of Nigeria, encompassing sea approaches from Calabar to the new international maritime boundaries with the Republic of Cameroon. The operational area also includes land territories in Mbo, Udung Uko, and Oron Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State.
