National badminton championship returns after three years break

Published

The highly anticipated Mutual Benefits National Badminton Championship is set to make a grand comeback after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament will commence on November 29, 2023, at the NIS Gym within the National Stadium in Lagos.

Over 160 talented badminton players representing 27 states across Nigeria are set to compete for a total prize pool of N5,340,000. In addition to the substantial prize money, players will also vie for valuable ranking points that will significantly impact their national rankings.

The tournament’s finals and closing ceremony are scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

The national rankings determined at this tournament will play a crucial role in selecting players for the national camp scheduled for next January.

This camp will serve as the platform to identify and train the Nigerian badminton team that will represent the nation at two major continental events in the first quarter of 2024: the All Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Egypt and the All Africa Games in Ghana.

NBF president Francis Orbih has expressed his commitment to providing players with more opportunities to compete and showcase their skills.

He acknowledged his previous pledge to “keep the players’ calendar crowded” and stated that he is actively exploring additional tournaments to fulfill this promise.
