NANS demands end to fuel scarcity

Published

The National Association of Nigerian Students has strongly condemned the ongoing fuel scarcity across parts of the country.

In a statement issued by the Senate President, Comrade Akinteye Afeez, NANS expressed deep concern over the situation, considering the prevailing economic challenges in the nation.

Afeez remarked, “It is unacceptable that we are experiencing such fuel scarcity at this time, especially with the economic situation we are facing. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited should be more proactive in addressing this issue.”

The student body questioned why fuel supply has deteriorated despite the leadership overseeing petroleum resources in Nigeria.

“President Bola Tinubu oversees the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources, and Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, is responsible for petroleum activities in the country. Yet, we are facing the worst fuel crisis in recent memory,” Afeez emphasized.

He highlighted the dire consequences of the fuel crisis, including unreliable electricity supply, soaring prices, and disruptions to essential services.

“Nigerian students, like the rest of the population, are suffering from the effects of this crisis every day. We demand immediate action from the NNPCL to resolve the fuel scarcity and restore stability to our nation,” Afeez added.

NANS called for transparency and accountability in providing information about the state of fuel supply and distribution.

Additionally, they urged the NNPCL to enhance infrastructure and logistics for efficient fuel distribution across the country, addressing bottlenecks and inefficiencies promptly.

The student body emphasized the need for engagement with stakeholders, including student representatives, to collaboratively find solutions to the crisis. Failure to take decisive action, they warned, could result in calls for the resignation or removal of Mele Kyari from office.

“Nigerian students cannot continue to suffer under ineffective leadership. If the NNPCL fails to address the fuel crisis promptly, we are prepared to take mass action. It is imperative for the NNPCL to prioritize the well-being of the Nigerian people,” Afeez concluded.
