USSD, Banks vs MTN, MTN Data subscription

Telecommunications giant, MTN, has announced that its customers now have access to data subscription services after three days of downtime.

WuzuupNigeria reported on Friday that the mobile network operator informed its about 77 million subscribers that they would be restricted from the data subscription services for three days, from Friday, due to an upgrade on their system.

Having completed the upgrade, MTN, whose customer base up about 45 per cent of the total telecommunication market share in Nigeria, announced that it has completed the system upgrade and customers can now make use of its data subscription service.

Notifying its customers on Sunday, MTN said, “Dear Customer, The upgrade affecting data purchases, has been completed. You can now buy data bundles across all our channels. Thank you for choosing MTN.”

Prior to the downtime on Friday, MTN has said, “If you can, please recharge and buy a data bundle before this time. Apologies for inconvenience,” the notice read.

Recall that a conflict with commercial banks over the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data charges had led to the blockage of MTN customers from banking channels.

Although the differences between the MTN and the banks have been resolved, the telecoms giant was forced to link its millions of subscribers to fintech platforms such as Flutterwave, Jumia Pay, OPay, Kuda, Carbon and BillsnPay to enable its customers to recharge their phones electronically.
