Mid-air emergency forces holiday jet diversion to London

A holiday flight operated by TUI Airways en route to the Mediterranean was compelled to turn back mid-journey on Saturday morning after the crew declared an in-flight emergency while over mainland Europe.

The service, Flight BY7614, had departed from Birmingham Airport at 06:20 BST, carrying passengers bound for Menorca in the Balearic Islands.

The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, registration G-TUMC, which had climbed normally and was cruising at approximately 37,000 feet as it tracked south over the English Channel and into French airspace.

While progressing over France, the flight crew encountered an unspecified technical or operational complication.

Rather than continuing its planned route toward Spain, the aircraft executed a sharp turn back toward the north, altering course toward the United Kingdom.

Flight tracking information confirmed that Squawk 7700 was subsequently transmitted, signalling a general emergency and prompting immediate priority handling by air traffic control.

The aircraft, identified under callsign TOM7614, was then cleared through congested airspace and directed on a priority approach toward London Gatwick Airport.

In response, air traffic controllers adjusted traffic flows to allow an expedited and direct landing path for the aircraft, bypassing standard arrival procedures. Emergency services and airport fire crews at Gatwick were placed on standby in accordance with established safety protocols for incoming aircraft under emergency conditions.

At the time of reporting, the aircraft was expected to land imminently. TUI Airways has yet to issue details regarding the nature of the incident, which remains unconfirmed and could relate either to a technical fault or a possible medical emergency involving a passenger or crew member.

The aircraft involved, the Boeing 737 MAX 8, is a modern twin-engine jet widely used for short to medium-haul commercial routes across Europe.
