Tottenham’s interim manager, Ryan Mason, has fumed at the VAR decision that ruled out Harry Kane’s goal as offside, following their 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

The defeat at Elland Road on Saturday afternoon placed a huge dent on Tottenham’s Champions League qualification hopes.

Spurs were hoping to keep the race alive after Leicester City surprisingly dropped three points last night against Newcastle United, but they failed to capitalise on the slip and denied their caretaker manager the chance to become the club’s first manager to win his opening three matches.

However, the win handed Marcelo Bielsa’s side their first home victory against a top 6 Premier League side as top striker, Patrick Bamford, bagged his 15th goal of the campaign.

Leeds took the lead in the opening 13th minute of the game through their second-highest goalscorer, Stuart Dallas, as Spurs’ defence was caught napping.

Dele Alli reminded Spurs of his class with a well-timed pass to tee up Son Heung-min for a one-on-one which he slid past Leeds’ goalkeeper to make it 1-1 in the 25th minute.

Tottenham thought they had taken the lead when Alli set up Harry Kane for a well-worked smooth finish to make it 2-1 but the goal was disallowed by a controversial VAR call for offside.

Bamford then restored the lead with a tap-in in the 42nd minute as they ended the first half ahead before Rodrigo killed the game in the 84th minute.

Spurs remain sixth on the log, five points away from the top for and could go further below with seventh-placed Liverpool having two games at hand.

With three games left for Spurs, one more win for third-placed Leicester and two wins for Chelsea who have a game at hand would mean that Tottenham cant qualify for the Champions League, even if they win Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester in their remaining games, according to UK Guardian.

After the game, Ryan Mason told to BT Sport: “We had moments, opportunities, but we were not clinical enough at times. They started bright, got in the lead, but we got a goal back and at 1-1 there was an offside decision … I’m shocked, I can’t believe it’s been given offside to be perfectly honest.

“I don’t think people understand the shift in momentum decisions like that can have in a game of football. 2-1 is a completely different game.

“Second half we had opportunities and big moments that didn’t go in for us, and we were chasing the game and they got one on the counter. My first, second and tenth look is that it’s not an offside decision.

“In my opinion, they got that one wrong. It’s a disappointing result that hurts. We will focus on the next game.”
