Marseille fire coach Gennaro Gattuso after five months

Published

Italian coach Gennaro Gattuso is poised to leave the Ligue 1 side, in the aftermath of Marseille’s 1-0 defeat at Brest last weekend, as indicated by a source closely involved in the negotiations, reported AFP on Monday.

Following Sunday’s match, where Marseille extended their winless streak to six games, Gattuso candidly remarked that the club had “hit rock bottom.”

During discussions on Monday, Gattuso candidly admitted that he felt he “no longer had any solutions” to rejuvenate Marseille’s fortunes, according to sources familiar with the talks.

The anticipated departure of Gattuso is expected to be characterized by a mutual agreement rather than a dismissal, sources suggest.

Famous sports journalist, Fabrizio Romano reportes the development on X on Monday. He stated ”Gennaro Gattuso has been sacked.

Gattuso and his staff have just been informed by Olympique Marseille board about their decision”.

Gattuso, 46, assumed his role at Marseille in late September, succeeding Marcelino Garcia Toral, who resigned after a brief tenure of seven competitive matches.

Despite his efforts, Gattuso struggled to reverse the team’s fortunes, with Marseille currently languishing in ninth place in the league standings, a considerable distance from contention for European qualification next season.

Reflecting on Marseille’s recent performance, Gattuso’s tenure has been marred by inconsistency, with the club failing to secure a league victory in 2024 since their match against Clermont on December 17. They were subsequently ousted from the cup by Rennes.

Despite these challenges, Marseille managed to secure a commendable 2-2 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League play-offs, with the return leg scheduled at the Velodrome on Thursday.

While the specifics of Gattuso’s departure remain pending, Marseille is actively scouting for a successor.
