Liverpool thump Wolves 4-0 to go level on points with Tottenham

Published

Liverpool returned to second on the log after beating Wolves 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday night to go level on points with league leaders, Tottenham.

Liverpool are still without some key starters, including Alisson  Becker who picked up an injury last week before their Champions League clash against Ajax last Tuesday.

22-year-old Kelleher replaced Alisson and was on his debut Premier League debut, pulling a brilliant save to deny Daniel Podence the opportunity to score a tricky lob in the first half.

Connor Coady’s miscued control fell into Mohamed Salah’s legs in the penalty box and the Egyptian beat Rui Patricio in the 24th minute to give the defending champions the lead.

Coady almost made up for his mistake by winning a penalty late in the first half but VAR ruled it out, probing beyond doubts that there was no contact between Mane and Wolves’ captain.

Georginio Wijnaldum made it 2-0 in the 58th minute with a sublime finish as Liverpool countered an outnumbered Wolve. The Dutchman curled the ball into the left corner, leaving Patricio with no chance.
Joël Matip then made it 3-0 in the 67th minute to put the game farther from the visitors. A short corner from the Reds saw Salah put in a cross that found Matip’s head and the back of the net.
Wolves’ right-back, Nélson Semedo made matters worse for his side when he put the ball in his own net in the 78th minute.
