Liverpool beat United 4-2 to keep Champions League hopes alive
Anfield giant, Liverpool, boosted their Champions League qualification battle with a 4-2 comeback defeat of Manchester United at Old Trafford.
United failed to cement their second position in the league with the defeat as they fell to their second consecutive home defeat in the space of four days after losing 2-1 to Leicester City on Tuesday. The defeat is their sixth home defeat of the season.
Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead 10 minutes into the game with a deflected shot but the hosts failed to capitalise on the advantage and went down by 2-1 before the break.
Diogo Jota began Liverpool’s resurgence with a sublime flick in the 34th minute before Roberto Firmino scored a header from a fantastic cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold in the closing minutes of the first half.
The Brazilian then bagged a brace in the opening two minutes of the second half to give Liverpool a 3-1 lead in 47 minutes but United weren’t ready to go down easily against their arch-rivals.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men pulled one back in the 68th minute through Marcus Rashford but a slip in search of an equaliser opened them up to a counter which gave Mohamed Salah the opportunity to seal the win in the 90th minute (4-2).
Manchester United have now lost just two of their last 16 home games against Liverpool in all competitions (W10 D4), as Liverpool clinched their first Old Trafford win in their last nine since a 0-3 loss in March 2014.
