Lionel Messi, Barca teammates in trouble for breaching COVID-19 protocol

Published

Barcelona star, Lionel Messi and his teammates are reportedly being investigated by the Spanish football association for a possible breach of COVID-19 protocol, after they celebrated a bonding barbecue outing at the Argentine’s house.

Marca reported that all the players attended the meal along with their partners, on Monday, after the vital 3-2 win over Valencia at the Estadio de Mestalla on Sunday evening.

The gathering held ahead of their crucial league-decider against Atletico Madrid on Saturday as the Blaugrana aim to win all of their four remaining La Liga Santander games.

However, the gathering might come with a heavy sanction for the Barca stars as reports revealed that La Liga is currently probing the footballers for possibly breaching the current coronavirus rules in place in Catalonia.

Marca had reported that the new COVID-19 rule states that there can be six people per table from separate households in open spaces.

According to Goal, Counsellor to the Generalitat de Catalunya presidency, Meritxell Budo said: “We know and have seen the images. The Public Health Agency that has the powers has seen them and will carry out a technical assessment in the coming days and will inform us on how to proceed.”

Reports added that La Liga officials are now gathering more information on the meeting to ascertain if the COVID-19 protocol was broken.

“The public health agency will study this case and decide whether to take it any further,” Pere Aragones, vice-president of the regional Catalan government, said on Tuesday.

He added: “We call on everyone to respect the (social distancing) measures and urge those in the public gaze to be extra attentive as they can lead by way of example.”
