Last supper parody at Paris Olympics sparks Catholic outrage

Published

During the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics, a parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper has sparked strong reactions, especially from the Catholic community.

The performance featured drag queens mimicking Jesus Christ’s final meal with his disciples.

Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota criticized the parody, calling it a “gross mockery.” In a video posted on X, he said, “This act is emblematic of a deeply secularist postmodern society that identifies Christianity as its enemy.”

Barron, who has a personal connection to Paris, questioned why France, a country known for its Catholic history and mission work, would choose to mock the Christian faith. “France has a culture grounded in Christianity, which values individual rights and freedoms. Why would it choose to mock Christianity?” he asked.

He urged Christians to speak out against the portrayal and not remain passive.
